Oscar Sunday! I know, I bet that is exactly what you all were thinking I was going to write, right? I mean, the anticipation of who will win best picture this Sunday is killing us over here in Curve, Pa! Will it be the serious but slightly humorous Alexander Payne film The Descendants, a baseball drama with Brad Pitt in Moneyball or a Scorsese-led Hugo? Other nominations in that category (in case you’d forgotten) are The Artist, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, The Help, Midnight in Paris, The Tree of Life and War Horse. Maybe we’ll revisit this topic on Friday and I’ll give you who I think will take home the Oscar.
One film that I do think was snubbed in the Best Picture category was this one below…
But what I’m sure you actually thought I meant with the title to this post Holy Cow It’s Almost Baseball Season! That’s right, just 43 days and change until we kick things off against the Erie SeaWolves right here at Peoples Natural Gas Field at 6:30 p.m. Things are already underway down in Bradenton with pitchers and catchers reporting over the weekend and already getting their first workouts in. Position players are already starting to arrive and some of the minor leaguers have also begun their treks to Pirate City.
If you’re looking to follow some of the young up and coming Bucs that have either passed through Altoona or could be on their way to Curve, Pa., here’s a starter list of their Twitter handles so you can follow them on Twitter (of course you should also follow us @AltoonaCurve but I’m sure you already do).

Neil Walker (Altoona 2006-07) – @NeilWalker18

We obviously couldn’t grab them all but there’s a few to get you started.
If you also hadn’t heard the news from yesterday we’ll be welcoming Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Bowl WR/KR Antonio Brown and Pittsburgh Penguins LW James Neal to Curve, Pa. this season! Brown will appear on Friday, April 6th thanks to Peoples Natural Gas and WTAJ-TV as part of Opening Weekend while Neal visits on Monday, August 27th thanks to the Altoona Trackers, Advanced Chiropractic and WTAJ-TV.
Fans can also grab these two games as part of a five-game pack dubbed the Black & Gold Star Pack, which also features the Fourth of July Fireworks Night (presented by the Pennsylvania Lottery) and two giveaway nights. The two giveaway nights will be the Starling Marte Canvas Painting Giveaway (thanks to Holiday Inn Express) on May 4th and the Gerrit Cole Fireball Giveaway (thanks to UniFirst) on July 20th. The five-game Black & Gold Star Pack plans start at just $30 for a Grandstand seat and you can pick one up today!
In a related story, I read this last week about Antonio Brown and the friend he made via Twitter during Super Bowl Week in Indy and it’s a pretty cool, interesting story so if you’ve got a minute you can check it out.
Last, and certainly not least, we’d like to congratulate Katie Sekelsky, who submitted the winning drawing design in our Design our 2012 Opening Day T-Shirt contest! Katie wins a suite for Opening Night (April 5th vs. Erie), a sweet rendition of her t-shirt (which will be on sale at the park on Opening Night) and she’ll also throw out the first pitch so congratulations Katie. Here’s her design submission:
That’s all we’ve got for now. Have a good rest of the work and and we’ll check back in for Oscar picks on Friday.
