As promised we’re back here on the blog on Friday with some Oscar pics! What do y’all do for Oscar parties? We’ll only run through and pick the big awards (because lets face it I’m sure most people haven’t seen any of the nominations in the Best Short Film or Best Short Film (live action) categories)
Best Visual Effects (HP7pt2, Hugo, Real Steel, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Transformers 3)
I’ve seen all but Hugo and Reel Steel out of these nominations (previews for the others) but I’ll go with Rise of the Planet of the Apes here. Totally great special effects and I think it beats out the kids from Hogwarts and the autobots.
Best Animated Feature Film (A Cat in Paris, Chico & Rita, Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots, Rango)
What are ‘A Cat in Paris’ and ‘Chico & Rita’? On that note, I can’t honestly believe that ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’ and ‘Puss in Boots’ are the cream of this crop but Bill Bettwy (Dir. of Mascot/Brand Development) says that Panda is pretty funny so we’ll go with Kung Fu Panda 2 in this category. Question though, how is Hugo not in this category as well? Isn’t it animated?
Best Supporting Actress (Berenice Benjo/The Artist, Jessica Chastain/The Help, Melissa McCarthy/Bridesmaids, Janet McTeer/Albert Nobss, Octavia Spencer/The Help)
Hmmm….going out on a limb here but lets say Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids as she made me feel uncomfortable watching it and that’s a darn good job.
Best Supporting Actor (Kenneth Branagh/My Week With Marilyn, Jonah Hill/Moneyball, Nick Nolte/Warrior, Christopher Plummer/Beginners, Max Von Sydow/Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close)
We’re a baseball team so we’re going with Jonah Hill from Moneyball. I mean, how can you go wrong with a baseball movie and he really sold it for me at that one part that everyone sees in the previews where he clutches his fist after they pull off the deal for Ricardo Rincon. In fact, that would be a cool graphic to show on the videoboard when the Curve score a run wouldn’t it?
Best Actress (Glenn Close/Albert Nobbs, Viola Davis/The Help, Rooney Mara/Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Meryl Streep/The Iron Lady, Michelle Williams/My Week with Marilyn)
We’re going to cop out a bit here and go with either/or because I’ve heard fantastic things about Viola Davis in ‘The Help’ and I thought that Rooney Mara in ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ really did a marvelous job playing Lisabeth Salander. So we’re going with a toss of of Viola Davis/The Help or Rooney Mara/Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Best Actor (Demian Bichir/A Better Life, George Clooney/The Descendants, Jean Dujardin/The Artist, Gary Oldman/Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Brad Pitt/Moneyball)
George Clooney in ‘The Descendants’ was awesome, that’s our pick.
Best Director (Woody Allen/Midnight in Paris, Michael Hazanavicius/The Artist, Terrance Malick/The Tree of Life, Alexander Payne/The Descendants, Martin Scorsese/Hugo)
Everything about The Descendants was good in my book so let’s go with Alexander Payne/The Descendants.
Best Film (The Artist, The Descendants, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life, War Horse)
This will be a more consensus pick on what people around the office have talked about and there’s been nothing but good things for The Help. So, that’s our pick: The Help.
On the baseball front, today was the first day of full squad workouts down in Bradenton which means we’re moving closer to the season and all the minor league players reporting. Minor league camp typically opens right around March 1st or soon thereafter and that is when the 2012 Altoona Curve will begin to take shape!
Well I hope you’ve got your popcorn ready for Sunday (we know Steamer will). Share your picks here or on our Facebook/Twitter. 40 days and change until the home opener on April 5th.
