Man what a gorgeous day it was today in Bradenton! Unfortunately the game ended in a tie but, hey, it’s Spring Training. We spent all day on location at McKechnie Field and arrived at 7:30 a.m. when the clubhouses opened so we could talk with some more former Curve player. FYI…T-shirt and pants weather in the morning when we left the hotel at 7:10 a.m…not to rub it in or anything.
As promised…we’ve got got some Jordy Mercer reaction to his Jordy Mercer “Lloyd Christmas” Bobblehead that we’ll be giving away on August 28. We showed Jordy the pre-painted version, which still need a few tweaks before we’re ready to show y’all, but nonetheless, we think he liked the concept….
While we’ve been down we’ve also been grabbing a few guys here and there to play some fun games with us that will appear on the videoboard in Curve, Pa. throughout the 2015 season. A little taste of what we’re talking about is below with Jordy Mercer. We asked him to name as many snacks as he could in 15 seconds? Why? Find out a game this year!
We were able to also sit..well stand really…with a few more alumni today including Tony Watson, J-Hay (Josh Harrison), Casey Sadler and Nick Kingham among others. It’s been really fun reminiscing with the guys now that five years has gone by since the 2010 championship year. All have very fond memories of that season and their time overall in Curve, Pa.
After we conducted interviews in the morning it was nearly game time! The Curve have been around for 16 seasons and are heading into the 17th. At no time in those years have the Pirates fielded a starting lineup (in a regular season game) that featured all nine starters having come through Curve, Pa. We’ve seen eight, not nine, but hopefully that day is not far off. Today we saw eight for the Spring Training “friendly” (ST games are kind of like friendly’s in soccer right..I mean they don’t count…).
Cole had a good day on the hill today, giving up a run on a solo home run to Miguel Sano (yes the same Miguel Sano that hit one that cleared the bleachers by a good distance back in 2013). Gerrit himself missed a homer by a few short feet as he drove one off the wall in left. Another notable thing from today’s game at McKechnie, Cutch returned to the lineup and smashed a double in his first AB. When he got to second he flashed..not a Z…but moreso appeared to rip open his shirt a la Superman. We’ll see if this becomes a thing..
As a part of our day we also took a walk around the beautiful McKechnie Field to get our surroundings and stumbled upon this absolute gem of a photo. The Marauders, like us and many other teams in MiLB, have a wall where they put up a plaque honoring of all their former players who have made it to The Show. They choose to do theirs as baseball card photos and this photo of 2011-2012 Curve RHP Duke Welker…is terrific.
We’ve got a few other little nuggets left for you on the blog today. Firstly…we talked about the Tommy John rehab progress and fishing with 2012-13 hurler Jameson Taillon, which you can find over on our website by clicking here. And with all this talk about the 2010 Championship Team, we thought it’d be pertinent to show you a mold mockup of what the Replica Ring Giveaway thanks to Burgmeier’s Hauling will look like on July 10th (first 1,500 fans). The “jewels” are just placeholders but it looks like it’s coming right along!
Ok that’s all for today. More content to come tomorrow as hope to spend most of the day over at Pirate City with the official opening of minor league camp.
